Shirley Baxter Doster was the daughter of the late Ms. Carrie Belle Doster and Mr. Wilbur Doster, Jr. She was born on September 14, 1944, in Houston County, AL.
She attended the public schools of Dale County, AL and graduated high school as valedictorian of her class. She continued her education at Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL where she graduated in 1965 with a degree in Education. While at Alabama State University she was inducted into the Beta PI Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She went on to obtain a Masters Degree from Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA before beginning her teaching career.
At an early age she professed her faith in
Jesus Christ and was later ordained into the Ministry in at St. Paul AME Church
in Ozark, AL. She served various roles as a member of St. Paul AME Church
including one of the founding members of the Heavenly Voices choir and President
of the Young People’s Department (YPD).
She was united in holy matrimony with the late Mr. Robert Baxter Sr. on December 25 th , 1965. The union was blessed with two children. A lifelong educator, Ms. Doster cherished her time spent in community service, teaching and educating students.
She was a charter member of the Kappa Pi Omega graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., an international service sorority. During her latter years of retirement she enjoyed writing poetry, substitute teaching, and taking various college courses to continue her educational pursuits.
She had a fervent love of books and writing and will be fondly remembered by the many students she mentored during her time spent as a Library Media Specialist with the Ozark City Schools.
Shirley generous spirit and kind nature will forever remain influential in the lives of all of those who knew her. She departed this life on September 16 th , 2021 at home surrounded by her family and loved ones following and extended illness.
